At the BMW Group 2023 Annual Conference, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, announced further details on the model range of the new BMW 5 Series, indicating that the 5 Series Sedan will also be available as an all-electric BMW M Performance model. “The fully electric BMW i4 M50* demonstrates how it manages to combine high performance and electric mobility to perfection,” said Zipse. “It was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022. An all-electric Performance model from BMW M GmbH will also be included in the line-up of the new 5 Series Sedan.”

Zipse revealed that a new variant will be added to the already wide choice of engines in the new 5 Series Touring. “The 5 Series Touring is very popular, especially in Europe,” he noted. “From spring 2024 it will also be available as a fully electric version, offering a truly unique product in this segment.” With the arrival of the BMW i5 Sedan in the premium executive segment, followed by the BMW i5 Touring in 2024, the BMW Group will continue to expand its all-electric offering. More than ten million BMW 5 Series cars produced

Its harmonious balance of sporty driving pleasure and long-distance comfort has made the BMW 5 Series Sedan a worldwide success. Over the course of 50 years and seven model generations, the 5 Series has established itself as the world’s most successful business sedan thanks to this distinctive characteristic rooted at the heart of the brand. More than ten million BMW 5 Series were produced from 1972 to early 2023. The first generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan hit the market in 1972. Its launch also marked the introduction of a new model designation system using a three-digit combination to indicate the model series and engine variant. One year on from the model’s 50th anniversary, the latest edition is set to take its place in the brand’s sedan portfolio, between the mid-size 3 Series and the luxurious 7 Series. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be built exclusively at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing. The plant in Lower Bavaria is the company’s largest production site in Europe. Production of the new BMW 5 Series will begin in the same year that the plant marks 50 years of BMW model production. The brand’s cars have been rolling off the production lines in Dingolfing since 1973 and the current range includes the BMW 7 Series and 8 Series luxury models as well as the all-electric BMW iX. BMW Group Plant Dingolfing also houses the competence centre for the production of electric propulsion systems, which is responsible for the on-site production of both electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5.
