The Monkey Puzzle Tree. All Tomorrow’s Futures linen blend fabric in Ocean Blue. This fabric was awarded a Design Guild Mark in 2022 for Excellence in Design. At first glance, ‘All Tomorrow’s Futures’ is a joyful, fast-paced representation of the natural world. Schools of fish dart across this beautiful, highly textured fabric and monkeys swing from tree to tree amidst exotic blooms. But on closer inspection, not all is as it seems within this intricate pattern. Hidden within the hand-carved linen pattern is a subtle message about humanity’s impact on the planet. Flocks of swallows turn into aeroplanes and factory fumes mingle with skulls and snakes. Yorkshire artist and illustrator Alexis Snell worked with us to create this exuberant yet thought-provoking design to explore the juxtaposition of the natural and industrial worlds. Alexis sketched the original design of ‘All Tomorrow’s Futures’ in pencil before hand carving it onto a linoleum block and printing it by hand. This pattern was then screen-printed at our historic factory in Cumbria onto a bespoke cotton-linen fabric with a handcrafted bouclé-like feel. “I really liked the idea of translating one of my designs into a different medium,” says Alexis, whose children’s book The Bear in the Stars was the starting point for All Tomorrow’s Futures. “We wanted to create a modern version of the Willow Pattern where the design tells a story. As an artist, I cannot make much difference to climate change, but what I can do is create images that make people think about what is happening to our planet. The name refers to the fact that the future of our planet could go in two different directions. We must act now to prevent disaster”. “All Tomorrow’s Futures” is available in three monochrome colours, reflecting the simplicity of the design’s original linoleum cut: Ocean Blue, Lobster Orange and Seaweed Green. The design lends itself perfectly to curtains, blinds, upholstery and cushions. Use it to inject vibrant colours into a neutral scheme or to add another layer of pattern to a maximalist interior. ‘All Tomorrow’s Futures’ would also be the perfect partner for hospitality environments that place an emphasis on sustainability.
